When it comes to buying a home security system, it can seem like a minefield. There is so much there to think about that it can quickly become overwhelming, and you’ll be tempted to just pick the cheapest option so that you can stop thinking about it. But that isn’t the best way to go about it! Instead, you want to be able to really understand what you need from your home security system, and be able to ask the right questions and find out if the security company is the right fit for you. To help you out, here are some questions to ask yourself and your provider before you spend a single penny on home security, to make sure you get the right solution.
Questions to ask Yourself
What am I protecting? Are you looking for a system to protect your property, your belongings, or the people inside it? Is there something particularly valuable you want to keep safe? Do you have outbuildings that need the added protection? Or do you need something that achieves all of the above? This question helps you work out what your priorities are, which shapes the type of security system you look for and the companies you choose to provide it.
How do I want to install it? Do you want a system that’s completely wired into the house, or something that’s a little more independent? And will your provider install it for you, or do you want more say in where things go and how they’re installed?
How big is my home? This will impact the type of system you choose. Smaller homes tend to need less of the bigger or bulkier protection, and can sometimes get away with fewer cameras or alarm points. But bigger home might need different types of security – all the way up to full CCTV, gate access control and more.
What is my family’s routine? How often is the house left unoccupied? If there is always someone in the house, this will affect the kind of security you need. But if your home is left vacant a lot, you might want more security to make up for it. You should also consider anyone who might be coming and going during the night, as this can impact the internal security you put in place.
What’s my budget? The big one – how much can you spend on your home security? Your budget will eliminate some options for you, and leave you only with the ones you can afford to choose between. This is a good way to narrow down your providers before you start interviewing them.
Questions to ask Your Provider
How long have they been in business? In home security, the length of time a provider has been established and trading often directly translates to their experience. In an ideal world you want an experienced company handling your home security, so that you know you’re getting the best advice possible.
What brand of equipment do they use? Before you ask this, do some research on your own to find out what equipment is reputable, and what should be avoided. This way when you speak to a provider you know if they are working with reputable equipment. Ask them why they choose the equipment they do, and what benefits that brings to you.
How often do they check their systems? Is there a servicing and maintenance cost included in their service? Can you request they come and check on equipment at regular intervals? Regular checks by the provider ensure that the systems are in perfect working order at all times.
Are there any extra charges? Some providers keep their market rates low by having lots of additional charges that add to the overall cost. This doesn’t mean they aren’t reputable, but you should bear it in mind when calculating the cost and choosing your service.
Where are they located? Most companies will have some kind of online platform that means they can provide their services to anyone, anywhere. But choosing a local company can have a lot of benefits, including easier installation and maintenance, specific knowledge of the local area and security concerns, and an easy point of contact.
Is there a contract? Some security systems will be a one-off cost, while others (like remote monitoring) will require more ongoing support. Make sure you find out if there is a contract involved in your security option, and what those terms are before you agree to them.
Can you keep the system when you move? Depending on the type of system and the provider, you might be able to take your security system with you when you move. This is the ideal scenario, as it means you don’t need to pay out for another system when you move.
