Yes.
Honestly, that would be our answer for absolutely everyone who asked that question. Because why wouldn’t you want to protect your home? It’s where you and your family live, your safe place, and where you store all of the things that have the most value to you (both monetary and sentimental). So the default should be to give your home the best protection you can from intruders, which means a home security system.
But many people don’t realise just how important a role home security systems can play in guarding your home, so today we wanted to go over some of the reasons you might want to consider a home security system for 2021.
Home Security By The Numbers
Before we dive into the pros of home security, we thought we would paint you a picture of the risk, using statistics. So, when asking if you need a security system, consider that:
- 59% of home burglaries happen during the day, while residents are at work or at school.
- Home with a lot of cover (like trees, fences and gardens) are most commonly broken into.
- Most break-ins occur in July and August, while residents are less likely to be home during daylight hours, even on weekends.
- February has the least amount of break-ins, on average.
- 95% of burglaries involve break-in by force, like breaking a window or door lock.
In many cases, a home security system could stop you becoming one of those statistics.
The Deterrent Factor
Above all else, having any form of home security system, no matter how basic, will be a huge deterrent to anyone trying to break into your home. Don’t believe us? According to the Electronic Security Association, security systems and monitoring significantly discourage break-ins, and reduce the loss if a home is broken into. 60% of convicted burglars say they will target another property if they discover a home security system in the one they are trying to rob. And if a house with a security system does fall victim to a crime, the average loss is around £2,000 less than in a home with no protection. So whether the goal is to prevent break-ins altogether, or just reducing loss from burglary, then it’s easy to see that security systems make a big difference.
Type Isn’t As Important As Presence
We know that for every person who doesn’t think they need a security system, there are 5 who are so confused by what type they need that they don’t get one at all. The bad news is that intent to get a security system doesn’t really help protect your home. The good news is that the type of security system you choose doesn’t have a huge impact on your risk of break-in – it’s the presence of a system that’s important. Any kind of security system will act as a deterrent to burglars and achieve the protection you need. The decision about whether you need just a standard burglar alarm or a full suite of CCTV cameras is more about identifying burglars if they do target or break into your home, as well as being able to generally monitor what goes on on your property. After all – how many video doorbells have caught the delivery driver who didn’t really knock, or the neighbourhood kid throwing stones at the car? So if you’re feeling stuck over the choice, remember that even the most basic system will do the job – and the more sophisticated ones will just give you extra perks
Insurance Perks
Speaking of perks, another reason to consider installing a home security system (that has nothing to do with security) is insurance. While it’s not true in all cases, many home insurance providers will give you a discount, or reduce your premiums if they see you have a working burglar alarm in place. Some will also consider extra security systems as an added bonus, and offer a further reduction – though this isn’t as common at the moment.
On the flip side, some insurance providers will only offer you cover if you have a working burglar alarm installed. This is usually if you live in a certain postcode where crime rates are particularly high, and the risk is reduced with a deterrent in place. And if you’re looking for a particularly high level of cover, for example if you have a lot of expensive jewellery and electronic gadgets to insure, then your provider will want to see you have your home well protected. So really, the benefits of a home security system go beyond just keeping your house and belongings safe!
