Just like time, the advancement of technology marches on and on. There are always new and exciting developments happening all the time, and those little changes help make life better for everyone. For us in the security industry, it means new ways to protect our customers and improve the security services we can provide. Since it’s early into 2024, we wanted to take this time to explore some of the security trends we think the new year will bring.
Improved Physical Intrusion Detection
The Internet of Things (IoT) provides the platform for a lot of new trends in security technology, especially when it comes to physical intrusion detection in residential properties. For example, doors and gates with access control mechanisms like biometric locks and RFID or keycard access doors will likely be integrated with other security measures, like surveillance and motion sensors. These technologies will be able to work together to enhance physical intrusion detection systems. So if a surveillance camera and sensor picks up someone in a place they shouldn’t be, the system will automatically alert the homeowner’s security provider. Getting smarter all-round!
Connected Home Security Systems
One of the big smart home trends we expect to see in 2024 is a rise in demand for internet-connected home security and surveillance. Connected home systems mean that parents can be sure of their children’s safety when they aren’t there, look in on their home whenever they want using an app, and generally have peace of mind that they can view their security cameras in real-time, as well as record it. These connected solutions can even include Voice over Internet Protocol (or VoIP) systems, allowing homeowners to ‘call’ people at home and talk to them through an audio speaker connected to the surveillance cameras.
Social media is also promoting new trends in security technology like one. Videos of exciting and funny interactions between homeowners and delivery personnel, toddlers and pets, etc., are often uploaded on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook and get thousands to millions of views. As more people appreciate the usefulness of connected home security systems, it is one of the home security trends that will continue in the next couple of years.
Environmental Monitoring
Any property that already has an advanced home security system is likely to receive an upgrade in 2024 to include devices that monitor environmental conditions. That might seem odd, but bear with us. Physical security as an industry has been expanding for a while, including detecting environmental factors that could put the resident’s general health and safety at risk. We can expect to see sensors and electronic monitoring devices that track the real-time status of things like air quality, indoor temperature, humidity etc, which will help with the early detection of fires, pollution, flooding etc. These things aren’t new – in fact, they’re very similar to the features used to detect gas leaks and set off carbon monoxide alarms. But combining them with AI creates a much smarter, holistic home security system.
More AI And Machine Learning Integrations
Speaking of artificial intelligence, we think that the home security world is absolutely primed for more involvement from the AI world. In particular, here are a few of the things we think will emerge over the next 12 months.
Voice and facial recognition for access: Hands-free devices are in high demand, and with the rise of smart devices they are more popular than ever. We think home security solutions in particular will be the target for voice and facial recognition integration. While there are already a lot of residential solutions for access control that use biometrics, voice and facial recognition to open doors or disarm alarms will be the next step.
Behavioural analysis: AI-powered home security solutions have machine learning capabilities that can be taught to analyse a resident’s behavioural patterns. The system can then alert the homeowner or the business owner about unusual activities or deviations from normal behaviour. For example, if the TV is on for 5 hours in the middle of the day when the house should be empty.
Predictive and pre-emptive alerts: Just like commercial security systems have been taught to analyse irregular behaviour and provide warnings, we think that these will be extended to home security as well. We also think they will be equipped with artificial intelligence to predict potentially dangerous situations and provide proactive security alerts.
Thermal imaging: Adding to the physical security side of things, we are likely to see thermal imaging introduced as a reinforcement. It’s a valuable feature in restricted areas and perimeter surveillance cameras – especially those that aren’t equipped with HD cameras.
HD video cameras: Who doesn’t love a ring camera nowadays? Every single year we’ve seen improvements in surveillance cameras simply by bringing in more high-definition cameras. As cameras get better it means surveillance cameras can capture video footage with incredible detail and clarity. As these better cameras become more widely available, we’ll see more affordable CCTV cameras recording higher-quality videos in nighttime, indoor and low-light environments.
At Securifix, we’re always keeping our eye on the technology and bringing in these new advancements for our customers. We’re always interested in trying out new technologies if it means we can provide higher security for our clients.
